Kids can Sleep with the Sharks at Maui Ocean Center

Throughout the year, Maui Ocean Center will hold several public sleepovers for children ages 8-13. The sleepovers are hosted by the center’s education team and give participants the chance to experience the Aquarium after dark, sleep with the sharks, learn fascinating facts about marine animals, and much more. Sleepovers typically begin at 5:30pm on a Friday and end the next morning at 8am. The cost is $60 plus tax per child and includes a pizza dinner, continental breakfast and snacks. Special group and membership rates are available. Reservations are required for the sleepovers. Sleepover activities are subject to change.

The aquarium after dark is a thrilling place to be – certain animals will come out of hiding while others seem to disappear from sight. Sleepover participants will have the unique opportunity to witness the nocturnal behavior of marine animals with an exciting night adventure tour of the Living Reef. Children will learn about the nighttime behavior of sharks and discover how some animals can make their own light. Activities include a supervised turtle feed at the Turtle Lagoon, ocean-themed games, hands-on discovery lessons, crafts, movies and more. At 11:00 p.m., it is lights’ out and time for everyone to tuck into their sleeping bags to sleep with the sharks. Participants will wake up to observe the beautiful Open Ocean Exhibit, feed more critters and enjoy a yummy continental breakfast before departure time at 8:00 a.m.

Aquarium members will receive 15% off admission. Advance reservations are required; call (808) 270-7075. For more program information, call (808) 270-7085. Private sleepovers for groups of 15-30 participants may also be booked throughout the year.
