WELCOME TO THE 12TH ANNUAL MAUI 5K!
Maui Ocean Center welcomes the community back in person for the 12th annual Maui 5K Run and Walk on Sunday, March 5, 2023! There will be a timed 5K run/walk and an untimed 1-mile walk for everyone from keiki (children) to kupuna (elders).
Challenge your classmates to run for your school and help spread the word during your next family get-together! Join in to support Maui nui schools, reconnect with the community, and celebrate the outdoors at this family-friendly event.
An extra donation (optional) may be made for the school of your choice during online registration.

Smooth Seahorse
Seahorses are true bony fishes with curved trunks, heads resembling a horse's head, and tails capable of grasping and holding on to strands of seaweed or algae. The smooth seahorse (Hippocampus kuda) is appropriately named as it lacks the spines common of other species. They are relatively rare (even after a population boom in 2005) and are most often seen in protected locations at shallow depths. They exhibit a mottled color from light to dark brown, depending on their surroundings.
Blacktip Reef Shark
Of the 40 species of sharks found in Hawai‘i, the blacktip reef shark is among the most common due to the areas it inhabits. The blacktip reef shark prefers shallow inshore areas where it is less vulnerable to larger species of sharks in the open ocean. The blacktip reef shark is easily identified by the prominent blacktips on its fins. In Hawai‘i, blacktip reef sharks will reach an average of 5.5 feet in length.
Hawaiian Squirrelfish
The Hawaiian squirrelfish, or ‘ala‘ihi in Hawaiian, are easily identified by their unique, vibrant red coloration, large eyes, and silvery-white stripes. The Hawaiian squirrelfish reaches approximately 6.5 inches in length and has a deep red dorsal fin with white spine tips and a unique white line beneath its mouth. Their dark, distinct eyes and unique behavior probably contribute to their popular name, squirrelfish.
