Limu is the Hawaiian word for many types of marine algae found in Hawaiʻi’s waters. More than simply seaweed, limu plays an important role in Hawaiʻi’s marine ecosystems and has deep cultural significance.
The outdoor exhibit will introduce guests to different species of Hawaiian limu, their traditional uses and cultural importance, and their role in the marine environment. Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team will also grow limu for display, education, and replanting efforts in Maui waters.
Limu has been gathered and used in Hawaiʻi for generations as food and for cultural practices. In the ocean, limu also provides food and habitat for marine life and contributes to healthy coastal ecosystems.
