Position Summary

Are you passionate about the ocean and love sharing your knowledge with others? Maui Ocean Center is looking for a Head Naturalist to lead and inspire our Marine Naturalist team! This role combines leadership, education, and guest engagement to create unforgettable experiences for our visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and mentor our Marine Naturalist team to deliver high-quality presentations and guest interactions.
  • Step in as a back-up Marine Naturalist for tours, presentations, special programs, and community events.
  • Support and help develop programs like day camps, sleepovers, Sea Talks, outreach, and evening events.
  • Work closely with our Education and Curatorial teams to create engaging, science-based learning experiences.
  • Assist with scheduling, payroll, program development, and departmental needs.
  • Occasionally serve as Manager on Duty and represent the Education team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Education, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in ecotourism, education, or environmental science.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and coach a team.
  • Excellent public speaking and guest service skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications for data collection, reporting, and content creation.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional overnights.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening

Work Environment:

  • Active, guest-facing role requiring standing, walking, and occasional lifting/setup of materials
  • Communicating with guests and colleagues throughout the day
