About Limu Lepe o Hina
Limu Lepe o Hina, also known as “red lettuce” or “ruffled limu,” is distinguished by its large, broad blades and ragged, ruffled edges. Its color ranges from deep rose to maroon, with reddish-yellow tones also appearing in its blades.
Frequently reaching 18–24 inches in diameter, this delicate limu is slippery and fragile. When lifted from the water, the blades can easily break into hand-sized pieces, which may wash ashore along the coastline.
On Maui, Limu Lepe o Hina can potentially be seen around Kahului.
Traditionally Prepared
Limu pālahalaha, also known as sea lettuce, has long been enjoyed in a variety of preparations. It can be mixed with other limu and salt and served with raw fish, added to boiling water to make a light soup, or combined with chili pepper and onions as a flavorful relish.
Limu pālahalaha was also traditionally used as an adornment in hula.
