Hina is the Hawaiian goddess associated with both coral and the moon. She is also the mother of the famous demigod Māui. Her name can be found within the names of many Hawaiian plants with silver leaves.
The silver coloration of the hinahina plant helps reflect sunlight and protect the plant from strong UV rays. If the leaves of this species are examined closely, you can see fine hairs that also aid in protection against strong sunlight.
Hinahina is the official island lei material of Kahoʻolawe.
