The History of Polo Beach
The area now known as Polo Beach was once part of a large cattle ranch called ‘Ulupalakua Ranch. The beach held the name “Dead Horse Beach” at the time, likely derived in some way from the cattle that would often wander down to the shore. As resorts and other developments began to populate the area, “Dead Horse Beach” wasn’t the most appealing name and marketers—potentially for the Wailea Resort—sought a more sophisticated name. Polo Beach was born.
Despite many changes over the years, Polo Beach has managed to retain its natural beauty and charm. The soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and amazing views continue to attract visitors from around the world.
Activities on Polo Beach
Under the Water
If you snorkel at Polo Beach, you can expect to swim among the beautiful coral reefs and marine life around Maui. With what is generally regarded as excellent visibility and water clarity, the conditions under the water could not be better for snorkelers. Calm, sunny days offer the best conditions, but the sheltered environment makes even those choppy days still decent for snorkeling. For renting gear, there are several shops nearby.
From the Beach
Surfing is a popular activity at most Maui beaches, but Polo Beach offers consistency given that the surf is rather reliable. Wave sizes vary depending on conditions and time of year, but from spring to fall, the swells tend to be pretty good for surfers of all experience levels.
Polo Beach also offers great paddleboarding experiences given that the seclusion offers calmer waters. And while you paddleboard, you can enjoy some of the more stunning views. While surfing and paddleboarding conditions may conflict with each other, there is an activity from the beach for whatever the conditions allow.
Some reviews have even mentioned that this spot is also a great place to boogie board.
On the Sand
Water-based activities aren’t the only fun you can have at Polo Beach. You may consider hiking one of the nearby trails, relaxing and soaking up the Maui sun, walking the shoreline in search of seashells or other washed up treasures, or watching the sunset. These dry land activities give you a chance to fully appreciate the beauty and peacefulness of Polo Beach.
Polo Beach Directions and Parking
Depending on where you’re coming from, here are some directions from a few key Maui areas. From Kahului Airport, take the Honoapiʻilani Highway south towards Kīhei, turn right onto Wailea Alanui Drive, and continue until you reach Polo Beach Road (the beach will be at the end).
From Kīhei, take the Honoapiʻilani Highway south towards Wailea, turn right onto Wailea Alanui Drive, and continue until you reach Polo Beach Road. From Lāhainā, take the Honoapiʻilani Highway east towards Kahului, turn left onto Wailea Alanui Drive and continue until you reach Polo Beach Road. Coming from both Kīhei and Lāhainā, turn left onto Polo Beach Road and follow it until you reach the beach.
Polo Beach does have a large public parking lot that is locked at night. There is paid parking available near Polo Beach, although cost does vary. Street parking is limited but available street parking is around the beach area.

Polo Beach offers several convenient public amenities, including restrooms—located near the beach access points—and outdoor showers. Lifeguards are on duty during peak season to ensure visitor safety.
What to Bring
When planning your trip to Polo Beach, it’s important to pack the essentials for a comfortable and enjoyable experience, including:
- Beach gear, swimsuit, towels, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Reef-safe sunscreen to protect you and our beautiful coral reefs.
- Water bottle and snacks.
- Water sports gear, like surfboards, snorkeling equipment, or paddle boards, if you decide to partake in these activities.
- Comfortable shoes for the walk to and from the beach, and if you decide to hike or explore the area.
Conservation Efforts
Conservation efforts at Polo Beach follow the general efforts of all Hawaiian beaches. Respecting marine protected areas, keeping our beaches clean, and practicing sustainability are all important efforts across each of our islands. Using reef-safe sunscreen is a must when snorkeling, swimming, or just lounging on the beach to keep our marine life and coral reefs safe from any harm.
