Many come to Maui to lounge on the beach and enjoy some delicious Hawaiian cuisine. But a large number of people come looking for adventure. Whether it be hiking, snorkeling, surfing, or horseback riding, there’s so much to do on Maui to satisfy any hungry adventurer. Among these wonderful activities is biking, exploring the beauty of the island on two wheels.

Depending on your preferred style of biking, we have all of that for you. Road biking, mountain biking, family rides, or something more casual are all in the repertoire of biking adventures here on the island. Maui’s network of trails and roads wind through breathtaking scenery, offering a combination of stunning vistas, challenging terrain, and scenic coastal roads.

Best Biking Trails in Maui

Haleakalā Downhill Ride

The Haleakalā Downhill Ride is an adventure that takes you down the slopes of the Haleakalā volcano. You’ll start at a higher elevation with excellent views of the island. This mostly downhill ride offers a memorable ride down Maui’s well-known volcano, all while enjoying the beauty of nature as you go.

 

The West Maui Loop

This famous loop is 60-miles long with steep climbs and epic views. It will take you through some of the diverse landscapes of West Maui, including coastal, rainforest, and desert views. This loop does require a high level of fitness given the challenging terrain and distance.

 

Kīhei Bike Path

For riders looking to get more leisure than action, this scenic and paved trail runs parallel to the highway. The flat terrain and wonderful ocean views are great for families or couples looking to get some movement before exploring nearby Kīhei.

 

Upcountry Maui Trails

Riders who want some diverse options might hit the nice variety of trails offered in this region. Kahakapao Loop Trail is a popular and manageable ride through forest, while more experienced riders tend to head into the West Maui Mountains. All in all, there are trails for riders of all experience levels.

 

Pineapple Express Trail in Makawao Forest Reserve 

Mountain bike trail seekers will love this thrilling downhill descent in Makawao Forest Reserve. With jumps and technical sections, it’s a well-maintained trail to challenge any rider. While the uphill climb can put you under strain, the downhill excitement is well worth it.

  • Follow trail etiquette by announcing when you pass and avoiding sudden switchbacks.
