A Complete Visitor’s Guide To Hāmoa Beach
Hāmoa Beach has been a favorite spot for locals and Maui veterans for decades. Now, one of the best stops on the epic Road to Hāna can be added to your adventure throughout the island.
Dubbed by the famous author, James Michener (author of Hawaii) as “the most beautiful beach in the Pacific,” Hāmoa Beach is often overlooked or skipped entirely by the thousands of visitors that trek the 600 curves and 59 bridges that line the Road to Hāna, but not for the reasons you may expect.
The beach lies tucked away just beyond the “final” stop on the Road to Hāna. Most people taking the journey are immediately drawn to Wai’ānapanapa Beach, known for its black sands, which is clearly marked as the end of the road. However, for those adventurous few, Hāmoa Beach lies past the last marker and offers a more classic idea of tropical paradise.
Most notably special about Hāmoa beach is the blend of black and white sand, giving the beach a unique “salt and pepper” aesthetic. The beach is guarded by a perfectly symmetrical crescent bay, which makes it ideal for swimming and other family activities.
Combine these natural elements with the smell of abundant wild ginger that lines the vegetation and the soft crashing waves of the Pacific, and it’s easy to see why this beach is so beloved.
Where is Hāmoa Beach & How to Get There
The key to Hāmoa Beach’s secret is its location. To get to the beach, you have to know where to look. Here is a breakdown of how to access this special beach.
Take The Hāna Highway Past Hāna Town
For the vast majority of your trip, you’ll be following the major road, the Hāna Highway. Don’t get distracted by the town of Hāna. Keep moving through the city and past all the beaches located in the town.
Look For Hāneo’o Road Just Past Kōkī Beach
On the outskirts of Hāna, you’ll start passing a few more beaches. Keep an eye out for Kōkī Beach signs. Just past is the first option to turn on Hāneo’o Road. Take a left, and you’re on the road to Hāmoa Beach!
If you miss the first turn, don’t worry! The road is a loop, so there will be a second opportunity to hop on the road about a mile down the road just past the Hāmoa Bay House & Bungalow. Keep on the lookout for a road on the left.
Find A Spot To Park On The Street
The beach has street parking available, but as always, keep an eye out for any signs indicating where public parking is available. For novice drivers, be aware that parallel parking is the only option for those visiting the beach.
Be sure to fold in your side mirrors! Many rental cars have been clipped by passing tour vans along this stretch of road.
Walk Down To Hāmoa Beach & Enjoy!
While the beach is very family-friendly, the walking path down to the beach is very steep. Keep that in mind when planning your attire and accessibility from those in your group!
Things to Do at Hāmoa Beach
As with every beach on Maui, Hāmoa Beach is great for sunbathing and catching some of that sweet, salty ocean air. Shade provided by the sea cliffs and the lush Hala trees offers an option for respite from the Hawaiian sun. There are only a handful of beaches on the Road to Hāna that allow you to take a nap under a tree. Hāmoa is one of them.
For those who get antsy at the beach (or left their book at the resort), Hāmoa Beach’s natural bay creates some great options for water activities.
Swimming & Bodysurfing
One of the favorite features of Hāmoa Beach from visitors and locals alike is the world-renowned “shore break.” The natural bay and steeply sloped shoreline create a consistent break for waves. Not large enough for surfers, but enough for those looking to have some fun in the beautiful Maui ocean waters.
Important notes for visitors: There are no lifeguards on the beach. The waves break hard and fast, which is great for experienced swimmers. Always keep a close eye on small children playing in the water.
Snorkeling
Due to the unique natural features of Hāmoa Beach, the bay is rich with endemic marine life. In particular, the north side (left side) of the bay has some rock outcroppings that are a great home to a variety of creatures.
Since Hāmoa Beach is still an “open ocean” beach, even with the bay, visibility in the waters is highly dependent on the swell and weather. However, for the typical Maui day, bring your snorkel gear and see the vibrant life that calls our island home!
We’ve had numerous visitors tell us that their snorkeling experience was enhanced by visiting the Maui Ocean Center before their excursion. Learn so many fascinating facts about our marine life and easily identify the wide array of fish swimming in Hāmoa Beach!

Visitor Tips For Hāmoa Beach
Now that the secret is officially out on Hāmoa Beach, it’s vital that you plan your day properly to maximize your experience. Nobody likes a crabby person on the beach, especially when you’re surrounded by the majesty of Maui.
Here are some key tips and tricks to ensure you have the best beach day.
Arriving At The Right Time
Due to the long, winding trek of the Road to Hāna, those aware of the beauty of Hāmoa Beach typically arrive between 2:00pm and 4:00pm local time. This is known to locals as the afternoon rush. While the beach is still secluded, this is when the Hāmoa reaches its highest visitation.
If you’re looking to get a quiet beach experience, with minimal parking hassle, try to arrive earlier in the day and spend the afternoon rush experiencing the local stops surrounding the beach.
The “Hāna Overnight” Strategy
Many of the Maui veterans abide by the Hāna Overnight itinerary. Essentially, book one of the many hotels, B&Bs, or resorts located in the town of Hāna. That way, you’re able to wake up early and easily beat the afternoon rush to the beach.
The entire drive on the Road to Hāna takes between 2 to 3 hours, even with minimal stops. Those who choose to stay in Hāna can break up the trip to minimize car time and maximize leisure.
Bring Reef-Safe Sunscreen
As of October 2022, Maui County has enacted a policy of prohibiting the sale, distribution, and use of non-mineral sunscreens. This policy is designed to preserve delicate coral reefs that line the island.
Only mineral-based sunscreens, which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, are allowed throughout the island. Learn more about reef-safe sunscreen options here.
Bathroom & Food Options
Yes, it feels strange combining these two into a single section, but they’re related. Also, they’re both very important to a fun day at the beach.
Hāmoa Beach does have public restrooms, most likely portable toilets at the top of the stairs, which can be used throughout the day.
For food, be aware that the beach itself does not have any food options. However, a “Hāmoa picnic” is on the bucket list for any visitor. The town of Hāna is filled with wonderful food trucks and other food options. Additionally, Hāna Farms, which is a popular stop along the Road to Hāna, is a great place to stock up on local favorites!
When traveling to Maui there will never be a shortage of things and places to see. Make sure you’re always abiding by local and cultural laws when exploring the natural beauty of Maui and most importantly, relax! That’s what you came to do after all.
