Best Things to Do in West Maui

July 28, 2025

There are many unique areas across Maui that provide a fun experience for visitors. West Maui has a little bit of everything. From beautiful beaches to resorts to cultural spots to activities, no visit to West Maui is ever boring. If anything, it gives us the perfect opportunity to promote Maui as a home for relaxation and exploration.

As you look to plan time in West Maui, we’ve offered ideas for the beach, the mountains, the restaurants, and all the various ways you can experience our culture.

Best Beaches & Ocean Activities in West Maui

Home to some of our island’s most amazing beaches, West Maui never disappoints. From the shores of Kāʻanapali Beach, perfect for resort-side relaxation and snorkeling, to more family-friendly waters of Kapalua and Nāpili Bays, there’s a perfect spot for every preference. And when conditions allow, the protected Honolua Bay allows for some of the best snorkeling and diving.

Seasonal whale watching starts in November and ends in May, peaking between January and March. It’s here you’ll witness unforgettable encounters with koholā (humpback whales). If you want an activity with a little more action, West Maui also delivers with parasailing, surfing, paddleboarding, and sunset cruises.

Explore West Maui’s Natural Wonders & Land Adventures

Hiking fans will love the challenging Waiheʻe Ridge Trail or the easier Kapalua Coastal Trail, both hikes providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. While you’re out exploring, be sure to not miss Nākālele Blowhole and Dragon’s Teeth, two unique natural formations that make for great photos. Golfers will love world-class golf courses such as Kapalua’s Plantation and Bay Courses, both boasting incredible ocean views. Don’t forget to take a scenic drive along the coast north of Kapalua to see West Maui’s natural beauty up close and personal.

Where to Dine & Shop in West Maui

Whalers Village in Kāʻanapali is a premier oceanfront destination, offering great shops and restaurants. It also provides the opportunity to engage with cultural activities, like hula shows and traditional lei making, often accompanied by live entertainment. West Maui’s food scene is unique and culinary fans are treated to options ranging from fine dining to farm-to-table to charming local eateries to food trucks. No matter your preference on activity or food, West Maui offers great choices to dine and shop.
