Top Things to Do in Lānaʻi, For the Relaxer & the Explorer

September 23, 2025

Lānaʻi offers a unique Hawaiian experience. To be fair, all of our Hawaiian islands do. But Lānaʻi blends an incredible experience with authentic adventure. Many visitors find their perfect schedule when on Lānaʻi, capitalizing on activities for everyone in the family. Whether you’re one to sit on the beach and enjoy the sun, or find fun in adventure and exploration, Lānaʻi will deliver both.

We’ve pulled our resources to give you a guide of things to do on Lānaʻi that will surely make your itinerary that much better. Whether you’re visiting Lānaʻi, or have the desire to island hop and see us on Maui, we want you to have the most enjoyable time in Hawaiʻi.

Sit Back & Relax

Lānaʻi offers the opportunity for rugged adventures, but we know not everyone is into that. Sometimes you simply want to sit back and relax. For a relaxing start to your Lānaʻi vacation, Hulopoʻe Bay is where to be. Considered Lānaʻi’s crown jewel, this protected marine reserve offers white sand and crystal-clear water. The real magic is the snorkeling just steps from the shore.

For a change of pace from the beach, head upcountry to historic Lānaʻi City. This is the heart of the island, a small plantation-era town centered around the Cook Island pines of Dole Park. You can spend an afternoon exploring boutiques, local art galleries, and authentic eateries that line the square. It’s the island’s cultural hub and the perfect place to experience local hospitality.

While you might not believe us, a unique and heartwarming experience lies within the Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary. This outdoor space provides a loving home for over 600 rescued cats and is an absolute must-visit for animal lovers. The sanctuary is a non-profit, and every visit and donation directly supports their mission.

Get Out & Explore Lānaʻi

If you aren’t one to kick back and relax, this wonderful island has so much for you to do. Many visitors looking for adventure will rent a 4×4 Jeep or another vehicle to take you all over the island.

Keahiakawelo is a vast rock garden of mysterious boulders and rust-colored lava formations that feel more like Mars than Hawaiʻi. It’s no wonder why its nickname is “Garden of the Gods.” This garden also holds deep spiritual significance in Hawaiian culture. We’ll let you in on a local Hawaiian secret—visit at sunrise or sunset. You won’t be disappointed.

For the ultimate view, take your car (and/or your hiking boots) up the Munro Trail. This 12.8-mile path winds through ironwood and eucalyptus forests along the island’s central ridge. Your payoff is the summit of Lānaʻinui, where, on a clear day, you can view six other Hawaiian islands.

Day Trips & Island Connections

Lānaʻi has the feel of the best of both worlds. You will have an intimate experience if you choose, but the island is also well-connected. This makes it the perfect base for island hopping.

A ferry service offers multiple daily departures from Mānele Harbor, connecting you to Maui across the ʻAuʻau Channel. From December through April—prime whale watching season—the channel is a sanctuary for migrating humpback whales.

If you’re traveling further than the ferry allows, Lānaʻi Airport provides another great travel option. Short, convenient flights connect you to Honolulu on Oʻahu, which serves as the central hub for reaching Kauaʻi, the Big Island, and other places throughout the Hawaiian archipelago.

Practical Tips for Visiting Lānaʻi

A little preparation goes a long way. Many of the Hawaiian islands offer plenty of resources. Lānaʻi can be a bit more limited, so planning ahead is key to making the most of your visit.

What to Pack

  • Layers for warmer days and cooler evenings. You may want to pack a light jacket or sweater to be more comfortable at night.
  • Sturdy footwear like hiking boots and closed-toe shoes, especially if you plan on exploring.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen to not only protect you but also our delicate coral reefs.
  • Multiple swimsuits, because no one wants to be left without a dry pair of trunks.
  • A small, comfortable backpack for carrying your essentials.

What to Plan Ahead

  • Book your rental vehicle early so there’s no stress about how you’ll explore once you get to Lānaʻi.
  • Confirm all accommodations because there are only a few hotels on the island. This is especially helpful during peak travel seasons.
  • Make dinner reservations and take advantage of the amazing local eateries. They can be smaller in size, so calling ahead will at least give you the chance for a spot.

When traveling to Maui there will never be a shortage of things and places to see. Make sure you’re always abiding by local and cultural laws when exploring the natural beauty of Maui and most importantly, relax! That’s what you came to do after all.
