The Living Reef
As one of the few aquariums in the world with live coral on display, the exhibits at Maui Ocean Center faithfully replicate the natural ocean ecosystem. Journey from the rocky surge zone to the edge of the deep reef. Get an up close view of tiny living coral polyps you never knew existed and elusive eels that dart out of sight, to endemic Hawaiian fish found nowhere else in the world.
Get up close and personal with Hawaiian green sea turtles at this outdoor two-view exhibit. See the animals from above the water, as they surface to breathe, or from a below viewing window for a unique view of these beloved creatures. Maui Ocean Center's sea turtles are part Sea Life Park Hawaii’s Hawaiian green sea turtle Educational Loan Program – a hatch-and-release program that educates guests about this endangered species.
Hammerhead Harbor is nicknamed the “nursery” of Maui Ocean Center. Hammerheads pups, as well as young blacktip sharks, grey reef sharks, and stingrays are often rotated in and out of this exhibit until they’re ready to move into the Open Ocean exhibit. Viewing is available from a lower window as well as from above. Small reef fish, bonefish (ō`io) and silvery leatherbacks (lai) glisten as they swim back and forth within this exhibit.
The Tide Pool
Get a hands-on feel for Hawaii's invertebrates at the Tide Pool. Constructed in the form of an ocean rock pool, the Tide Pool holds a variety of harmless marine animals. Under the guidance of a marine naturalist, you are welcome to touch the inhabitants of this display.
Marine Mammal Discovery Center
See the world from a whale's point of view! View interpretive displays of the humpback whale and dolphins that are found in Hawaiian waters, plus the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. Encounter a life-size model of a monk seal mother and pup, see authentic humpback whale artifacts, and get the chance to experience what it is like to be the krill that is gathered up and eaten by humpback whales in Alaskan waters in the Bubble Net exhibit.
Maui Ocean Center does not exhibit live monk seals and is respectfully in compliance with a County of Maui ordinance prohibiting the exhibit of cetaceans (whales and dolphins). Learn about these animals through interpretive displays in the Marine Mammal Discovery Center, naturalist presentations and volunteers of organizations from the Maui community or out in their natural habitats.
Hawaiians and the Sea
Explore the close relationship between the ancient Hawaiians and the Pacific Ocean in this inspiring exhibit. The ancient Hawaiians were expert navigators, using the stars as guides and traveling in their handmade, hydrodynamically perfected vessels. These proficient fishermen were also masters at designing and building aquaculture systems that provided food without depleting the island's natural resources. Hawaiians and the Sea is also the venue for weekly Story Time Saturdays and other special activity and presentations.
Sea Jelly Gallery
Watch moon jellies as they appear to dance before your eyes in a stunning floor-to-ceiling cylinder, perhaps the aquarium's most soothing exhibit. Their gentle pulsating and pumping prevents the jellies from sinking while increasing the likelihood of it capturing prey in its stinging tentacles.
The Open Ocean
A 54-foot-long clear acrylic tunnel transports you through this underwater realm, providing a 240-degree view of thousands of fishes, while stingrays slide overhead and sharks look visitors in the eye. This 750,000-gallon salt-water aquarium is the largest in the state. Certified divers may enter this exhibit as part of the Shark Dive Maui® program.
The quick and easy Reef Café offers an assortment of take-out, including sandwiches, salads, homemade pizzas, and hot daily specials, with open seating in a casual outdoor atmosphere. A variety of snacks and desserts, including the famous Roselani ice cream, are also available.
Hale Mea Ono Coffee Cart
Uplift yourself with an espresso beverage of your choice or snack from Hale Mea Ono. For something cool and refreshing, shave ice, bubble tea and ice cold fresh coconuts are also available.
